The present invention relates to the technical field of early diagnosis and prediction of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) including sepsis in asymptomatic patients, preferably in patients undergoing a surgical intervention. In particular it is provided a method for detection or diagnosis of SIRS, or for detection or diagnosis of a risk to suffer from or develop SIRS, in an asymptomatic patient, comprising the steps of a) determining the level of IL-6 or a variant thereof in a sample from the patient; b) comparing the level of IL-6 or a variant thereof determined in step a) to a reference level; c) detecting or diagnosing SIRS, or detecting or diagnosing a risk to suffer from or develop SIRS; wherein the sample is isolated at least 2 times at short intervals and steps a) and b) are repeated for each sample. Corresponding therapy monitoring and mortality prediction methods, kit of parts are also provided. |
