IL-6 DETECTION BASED EARLY DIAGNOSIS AND PREDICTION OF SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE SYNDROME AND SEPSIS IN ASYMPTOMATIC PATIENTS

The present invention relates to the technical field of early diagnosis and prediction of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) including sepsis in asymptomatic patients, preferably in patients undergoing a surgical intervention. In particular it is provided a method for detection or diagnosis of SIRS, or for detection or diagnosis of a risk to suffer from or develop SIRS, in an asymptomatic patient, comprising the steps of a) determining the level of IL-6 or a variant thereof in a sample from the patient; b) comparing the level of IL-6 or a variant thereof determined in step a) to a reference level; c) detecting or diagnosing SIRS, or detecting or diagnosing a risk to suffer from or develop SIRS; wherein the sample is isolated at least 2 times at short intervals and steps a) and b) are repeated for each sample. Corresponding therapy monitoring and mortality prediction methods, kit of parts are also provided.
