The invention relates to a mould element (1), such as in particular a mould plate, of a mould of a continuous casting installation, made of copper or a copper alloy, with a surface area which is in contact with a steel melt during the operation of the mould, wherein a wear-resisting coating (2) is provided at least on this surface area, characterized in that the coating is a chemically-autocatalytically applied nickel-phosphorus dispersion coating (3) with incorporated hard-material particles (4), wherein the phosphorus fraction of the coating lies in the range between 4 and 10%.
