The method involves applying two voltages to a terminal (12), and checking whether two measurement signals resting at another terminal (14) are equal to or under predetermined threshold values in relation to the voltages, respectively such that defect of a sensor (10) e.g. acceleration sensor and angular rate sensor, is detected. Short circuit checking process is carried out in a control unit (30) of a motor car. The measurement signals of the sensor are not utilized by the control unit during starting or shutdown of a combustion engine of the motor car. An independent claim is also included for a control unit for a motor car, comprising a memory component.
