<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of forming an image having an appropriate density even when a toner charge amount changes. <P>SOLUTION: The measuring light irradiated from a laser oscillator 201 is reflected on a patch image formed on an intermediate transfer belt 51 and received by a line sensor 204 to detect the height of the patch image. Besides, the patch image is fixed onto a recording material P, and read by a reader unit 100A to detect the density.
