摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element having photoelasticity which is amorphism; in which the birefringence is extensive and changes in the linear manner to the stress or the distortion from the outside ; and in which birefringence control is easy. SOLUTION: The optical element having photoelasticity, including an aliphatic polycarbonate which is expressed in the general formula (1), which is obtained as epoxide and carbon oxide bond alternately, and which does not include an ether bond component that can be detected by<SP>1</SP>H-NMR analysis, is characterized by having a stress optic coefficient within the range of 0.1 to 2.0 GPa<SP>-1</SP>.
