Textiles are brightened by treating them with a water-insoluble solvent having dissolved therein a small quantity of a compound of the formula <PICT:0689708/IV (c)/1> wherein X1 and X2 denote hydrogen or a methyl or ethyl group and Y denotes hydrogen or a methyl group, and subsequently steaming. The organic solvents may contain also oil-soluble soaps. In examples: (1) acetate fabric is treated with a solution of 7-diethyl-amino-4-methylcoumarin in trichlorethylene, squeezed, dried and steamed; (2) a mixed fabric of wool and nylon is treated with a solution obtained by adding a solution of 7-dimethylamino-4-methyl-coumarin in trichlorethylene to light petroleum, dried and steamed; (3) woollen material is dry-cleaned with a solution of 7-diethylamino-4-methylcoumarin in carbon tetrachloride and then steamed; and (4) a printed silk fabric with a white ground is dry-cleaned with a solution of 7-monoethyl-amino-4-methylcoumarin in tetrachlorethane and then steamed. The use of 7-monomethylamino-4-methylcoumarin and 7-diethylamino-3,4-dimethylcoumarin also is referred to. |
