In a data transfer device and method for storing data generated by a processor into a storage unit and burst-transferring the data from the storage unit to a processing unit by way of a transfer unit, on the basis of the access performance when the processor accesses the storage unit, a predetermined value for a burst width and information related to the amount of time required for data processing by the processing unit are set beforehand for the data transfer device. In the data transfer device, when the transfer unit performs the data transfer, the amount of time allowed for the data transfer is calculated on the basis of the information related to the amount of time required for the data processing to be performed by the processing unit, and the burst width is determined to be a value greater than or equal to the predetermined value for the burst width and that is as near as possible to the predetermined value for the burst width within a range for which the transfer of data can be completed within the allowed amount of time.
