PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide compositions and methods for repairing and regenerating cartilage defects which overcome the problems associated with the currently available methods and compositions.

SOLUTION: The present invention provides the methods of repairing and regenerating cartilage tissue by administering into the cartilage or into the area surrounding the cartilage a composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of a morphogenic protein. In some embodiments, the present invention provides the method of repairing a cartilage defect in a patient comprising the step of administering into the cartilage or into the area surrounding the cartilage the composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of the morphogenic protein. The present invention also provides the method of repairing or regenerating a cartilage defect in a patient comprising the step of administering into the cartilage or into the area surrounding the cartilage the composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of the morphogenic protein.
