PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To consistently and constantly maintain an axial clearance, in a mechanical lash adjuster configured in such a manner that a contraction difference caused by a difference in a coefficient of linear expansion between an engine block and a valve is absorbed by the axial clearance in a plunger. SOLUTION: The plunger 23 incorporated in a cylindrical body 21 is divided into a screw member 25 threadably engaged with a female screw 22 formed around the inner periphery of the body 21 and a sliding member 24 having a tip end facing the outside from an opening at one end of the body 21, and torque in a direction moving toward the sliding member 24 by a spring member 30 is applied to the screw member 25. The lower surface of the sliding member 24 is formed with a recessed portion 38, a presser 41 and an elastic member 44 are incorporated in the recessed portion 38, a stopper 39 is provided for preventing detachment of the presser 41 with the tip end of the presser 41 projected from the lower surface of the sliding member 24, and the axial clearance 45 having a size corresponding to the projected length of the presser 41 is formed between the opposed surfaces of the screw member 25 and sliding member 24.
