PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine, determining compression preignition and heat source preignition by a single preignition detection without depending on engine speed. SOLUTION: This control device for the internal combustion engine includes: an abnormal combustion detection means detecting abnormal combustion performing self-ignition irrespective of ignition by an ignition means; a preignition determination means detecting abnormal combustion occurring timing based on information on detection of the abnormal combustion and determining whether or not the abnormal combustion is preignition based on the comparison of preignition determination timing with the abnormal combustion occurring timing; a heat source preignition determination means determining the heat source preignition and compression preignition based on the comparison of the abnormal combustion occurring timing with the heat source preignition determination timing from the preignition determination means; a first avoidance means avoiding the heat source preignition when determined as the heat source preignition; and a second avoidance means avoiding the compression preignition when determined as the compression preignition.
