PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a photoelectric conversion semiconductor layer or a photoelectric conversion element with a photoelectric conversion semiconductor layer that has high photoelectric conversion efficiency.

SOLUTION: The photoelectric conversion semiconductor layer 30 of the photoelectric conversion element 1 is formed by applying a coating material including platy particles which have a CuAu-type structure and includes group Ib, group IIIb and group VIb elements of a short-period type periodic table as components, carrying out a heat treatment at 200 to 470°C in an atmosphere of group VIb element gas of the short-period type periodic table corresponding to the group VIb element of the short period type periodic table which forms the platy particles and inert gas, and then pressing the heat-treated coating material under 5 to 20 MPa.
