<p>An internal combustion engine configured so that premixed combustion and diffusion combustion are performed within the combustion chamber, wherein the premixed combustion and the diffusion combustion are separated either by performing control for limiting the minimum value of the heat generation ratio between the center of gravity of the premixed combustion and the center of gravity of the diffusion combustion or by performing control for adjusting the interval between a first injection for performing the premixed combustion and a second injection for performing the diffusion combustion. Thus, the combustion within the combustion chamber is performed as separated combustion in which the premixed combustion and the diffusion combustion are separated. As a result, the delay of the ignition for preceding premixed combustion does not affect the succeeding diffusion combustion, and this enables the advantages of both the premixed combustion and the diffusion combustion to be utilized. The configuration enables the emission to be reduced and the combustion to be stabilized even in transitional operation and even when low cetane number fuel is used.</p> |
