<p>The method (400) involves detecting maximum velocity (410) desired by a driver of a motor car, and scanning information (420) of an environment of the car using a satellite navigation system e.g. global positioning system (GPS), where the scanned information represents distance to a preceding car. Velocity profile and/or acceleration profile of the motor car are determined (430) by adapting the desired maximum velocity in a consumption-optimized manner. Velocity and/or acceleration of the motor car are defined (440) based on the desired velocity profile and the acceleration profile.
