A filter mounting structure for an internal combustion engine (1), capable of preventing deformation of flanges when mounting a filter (25) on exhaust piping (16), thereby improving the sealing property of a filter-mounted portion (25b) and positively preventing leakage of exhaust gases, while maintaining a simple construction. In the filter mounting structure, a pair of flanges (31) are provided on a low-pressure EGR pipe (16) and a connecting pipe (28), respectively. A gasket (32) is sandwiched between the flanges (31). The gasket (32) has a sealing portion (32b) for sealing exhaust gases, disposed outward of the outer peripheral surface of the low-pressure EGR pipe (16) in a manner spaced therefrom and sandwiched between the flanges (31), and a holding portion (32d) for holding the filter (25), engaged with the filter mounting portion (25b) and disposed inward of the sealing portion (32b). The thickness of the sealing portion (32b) is set to be not smaller than the total thickness of the filter (25) and the holding portion (32d). |
