The device has an electrically controllable display element (1) with non-polar liquid (3) and two electrically conductive or polar liquids (2) that are spatially separated from each other. A retaining volume (6) is connected with a visible partial volume (4) and a partial volume (5) and retains one polar liquid. Each of the polar liquids engages a volume that is measured such that the volume always forms a closure between the retaining volume and one partial volume independent of voltage applied on an electrode assembly, where the closure is fluidically sealed for the non-polar liquids.
