The present invention concerns an in vitro method for identifying a fur-bearing animal having essentially or exclusively down hair, wherein said method comprises the step of detecting the presence of a mutation in the lipase H (LIPH) gene in a biological sample obtained from said fur-bearing animal. The method further improves the reduction of guard hair by comprising a step of measuring the expression level of LIPH gene.
