Radial/axial dynamo electric machine (dem)

The dynamo electric machine which may be incorporated into a vehicle wheel comprises both a radial and axial air gap associated with rotor/stator windings facing each other across the gaps. Rotor 1 carries windings 2 which oppose windings 3 on the stator 5 across the radial air gap, windings 7 and 15 being associated with the axial air gap. Additional windings 16 on removable extension 14 may be provided. The dem may operate as a motor or a generator, acting as a brake, and a battery 6 may be mounted within the stator to receive energy generated by the dem in braking mode. The battery may also include suspension designed to convert vibrational kinetic energy in to electrical energy to be stored. The use of wireless control of the arrangement is disclosed as is monitoring of the individual wheel function. The machine may be sealed or admission of pressurised air from the frame may exclude dust and moisture of the machine. Cooling may be provided by fluid circulation through the stator frame or from the pressurised air.
