<p>An array of LED illumination devices 11 are mounted on electrical connections 8 and encapsulated in a body 25 that also forms an optical non-imaging light concentrator means. The resultant LED assembly has a light concentrator for coupling to a guiding layer (20) of a edge-lit light guide device (figs 2e,2f) such as those suitable for providing a back-light to a display (fig 9a,b). Preferably the concentrator is a compound parabolic concentrator and is injection moulded on to the LEDs and a underlying lead-frame that provides electrical connection to the LEDs. The light guide device can provide a large area back lighting by having scattering means (60) associated with cladding layers over which are a number of micro-lenses(51). The lead-frame may comprise a number of parallel legs 7 connected to a perimeter frame, this frame portion being removed after an optical grade polymer encapsulant is moulded.
