PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for inactivating a residual alkali metal, by which the excessive alkali metal left after the dehalogenating decomposition of an organic halogen compound-containing oil to be treated with the alkali metal can perfectly be decomposed and eliminated in a short time. SOLUTION: This method for inactivating the residual alkali metal is characterized by adding water in an amount of≥1.2 times the total moles of the residual alkali metal in several portions, while confirming the amount of the produced hydrogen.
