Sensor nodes (32,34,36) are adapted to change their duty cycles when they detect an event and transmit, by way of a duty cycle notification protocol, requests to neighboring nodes to influence their duty cycles. The sensor nodes in the network can modify their own duty cycle between a plurality of values dependent on the timing of the event, the location in an area where the event is detected and the requests they receive from neighboring nodes. |
