The invention relates to a method of increasing the CO2 carrying capacity of a CaO-based sorbent, the method comprising doping a sorbent with the mineral acid HBr or other Br- containing salt, methods of reacting CaO with CO2 at high temperature comprising the use of HBr-doped CaO-based sorbents and applications of the methods including CO2 capture, sorbent-enhanced water gas shift reactions and storage of heat in the form of chemical energy.
