An electrical connector assembly comprises a circuit board (12) having vias (54) extending at least partially through the circuit board (12) along via axes (106). The circuit board (12) has traces (104) and mounting pads (102) that are electrically connected to the traces (104). The mounting pads (102) are exposed within the vias (54). An electrical connector is mounted on the circuit board. The electrical connector comprises a housing and signal terminals (26) held by the housing. The signal terminals (26) have mounting contacts (30) configured to be received in respective said vias (54). Each of the vias (54) has a staged diameter along the via axis (106) with a constricted region (94) proximate to the mounting pad (102), and the mounting contacts (30) engage the mounting pads (102) within the constricted regions (94) of the vias (54).
