A method for application of the surface layer of metal articles and device for realization thereof, is intended for use in mechanical engineering and other branches of engineering. The technical problem: by controlling physical and chemical processes on the boundary of metal - saturating medium with the help of an electric field to obtain coatings of different chemical composition and service characteristics. The problem is solved due to the fact that the voltage of the electric field in the area of ​​treated surface of the article is sufficient for the formation of electrical discharge between the electrode and the surface of the article. Technical result: providing a fixed composition of the surface layer and operating properties of the article, which is saturated.
