Phenylenediamine compounds (I) and their organic or inorganic acid or base salts, geometrical or optical isomers, or solvates such as hydrates, are new. ALK : divalent alkylene chain, alkenylene or alkynylene; R (when n is >= 2) : halo comprising Cl, 1-6C alkyl groups (optionally substituted with one or more groups comprising OH, 1-2C alkoxy, (poly)-2-4C hydroxyalkoxy, acylamino, amino substituted with two 1-4C alkyl, optionally bearing at least one OH group or the two groups to form, with the N atom to which they are attached, a 5-7 membered, preferably 5 or 6 membered heterocycle (optionally saturated, optionally substituted and comprising heteroatom different from N)), hydroxyl group, 1-6C alkoxy, 1-6C alkylthio group, (poly)-2-6C hydroxyalkoxy, amino group, 1-6C alkyl(dialkyl)amino group, 5-6 membered heterocycloalkyl, -NH-COR1a, (R1a) 2N-CO-, R1aSO 2-NH-, (R1a) 2N-SO 2-, COOH, SO 2OH in the form of acid or salt (preferably with alkaline metal or ammonium salt), optionally substituted, CN, NO 2, NO, or 1-6C polyhaloalkyl (preferably trifluotomethyl); R1a : H or 1-4C alkyl optionally carrying at least one OH; n : 0-4, preferably 0-2; either R1, R2 : optionally substituted 1-10C alkyl; or NR1R2 : optionally substituted heterocycloalkyl group; R3 : H or optionally substituted alkyl group; and R4 : -NO 2, -NO or -NH 2, preferably NO 2or -NH 2.
