<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact illuminator which performs effective heat radiation and is reduced in power consumption in a projection type display device including a light source using a light emitting element such as a light emitting diode or a semiconductor laser, and to provide the projection type display device. <P>SOLUTION: The illuminator 10 includes: a plurality of light sources; a phosphor layer 211 which is stimulated by one of the light sources and emits light; and a condensing lens which defines an optical path of light emitted from the plurality of light sources and the phosphor layer 211. The phosphor layer 211 is formed on thermally conductive substrate glass 210, and the substrate glass 210 is integrated with a heat sink 240 and fixedly arranged.
