PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a base material for lithium ion secondary battery with reduced variations in its surface when complexed, little desquamation of a complex compound, and less generation of a wrinkle. SOLUTION: The base material for lithium ion secondary battery consists of a nonwoven fabric containing synthetic resin short fibers and fibrillated lyocell fibers as essential components, wherein a ratio (MDs/CDs) of a tensile strength in the flow direction (MDs) to a tensile strength in a width direction (CDs) is 3.0 or smaller.
