The disclosed lithium secondary battery is provided with a cathode and an anode (20). The anode (20) has a structure wherein an anode active material layer (24) containing anode active materials (21a, 21b) is retained on an anode collector (22). The anode active material layer (24) has a structure of at least two layers-a collector-side active material layer (24a) provided on the anode collector (22) and a surface-side active material layer (24b) provided on said collector-side active material layer (24a)-the average specific surface area of the anode active material (21b) contained in the surface-side active material layer (24b) is greater than the average specific surface area of the anode active material (21a) contained in the collector-side active material layer (24a), and the average specific surface area of the anode active materials contained in the anode active material layer (24) as a whole is 3.3 m2/g to 5.6 m2/g.
