<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a text display apparatus that can more effectively assist a user in understanding or learning the overall meaning of a displayed text. <P>SOLUTION: Words included in an example text Tn displayed in a text display screen G are classified by the level of difficulty, a dictionary is searched for simplified explanatory information about (simplified translations of) the classified words, and explanatory assistance blocks B1-Bn individually describing the simplified explanatory information about the words are displayed along with the example text Tn in the order of the word sequence. The displayed explanatory assistance blocks B1-Bn of the words are scrolled forward or backward when an optional block Bn is touched and slid in the sequence direction. When an optional block Bn is touched and slid downward, the block Bn is erased and subsequent blocks Bn+1, Bn+2, ... are moved in and displayed.
