PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for molding an optical element having high shape accuracy in a molding die in which a closed space is formed between the recessed molding surface of the molding die and a glass base stock. SOLUTION: A pair of an upper die and a lower die 18 are arranged to be opposed to each other, the glass base stock 20 is arranged between them, and a sleeve into which the pair of the upper die and the lower die 18 are inserted, is disposed. The glass base stock 20 is heated, softened, pressurized and molded. A minute flow path 24 which is formed between the glass base stock 20 and the recessed molding surface 18a and releases gas from the closed space 22, is formed on the recessed molding surface 18a formed on at least the lower die 18 of the pair of the upper die and the lower die 18.
