PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystalline compound stable to heat and light, etc., turning to a nematic phase over a wide temperature range, low in viscosity, having appropriate optical anisotropy, and further, having high dielectric constant anisotropy and high compatibility with other liquid crystalline compounds. SOLUTION: The liquid crystalline compound is a compound (1) of formula (1). For example, in the formula (1), R<SP>0</SP>and R<SP>1</SP>are each independently 1C-20C alkyl; rings A<SP>1</SP>to A<SP>8</SP>are each independently a 1,4-cyclohexylene group or 1,4-phenylene group; Z<SP>1</SP>to Z<SP>8</SP>are each independently a single bond, -CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>-, -CH=CH-, -C≡C-, -COO-, -OCO-, -CF<SB>2</SB>O-, -OCF<SB>2</SB>-, -CH<SB>2</SB>O-, -OCH<SB>2</SB>- or -CF=CF-; and L<SP>1</SP>to L<SP>5</SP>are each independently H or a halogen atom.
