<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the NO<SB>x</SB>cleaning capability of an exhaust gas cleaning catalyst while maintaining its heat resistance, and to reduce the cost of the catalyst. <P>SOLUTION: The exhaust gas cleaning catalyst includes a first catalyst layer 2 that is supported on a carrier 1, comprises Rh, and does not comprise Pd; and a second catalyst layer 3 that is disposed closer to the carrier 1 relative to the first catalyst layer 2, comprises Pd, and does not comprise Rh. In the first catalyst layer 2, Rh is distributed to a first Zr-based composite oxide and to a first CeZr-based composite oxide to be supported thereby, and in the second catalyst layer 3, Pd is distributed to a second Zr-based composite oxide and to a second CeZr-based composite oxide to be supported thereby.
