PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermoelectric conversion material using an Si clathrate compound having an excellent thermoelectric conversion property suitable for a thermoelectric conversion element. SOLUTION: The thermoelectric convesion material uses a clathrate compound A<SB>a</SB>M<SB>b</SB>Q<SB>c</SB>Si<SB>46-b-c</SB>(an element A is an element of not less than one component selected from Ba and Sr, an element M is an element of not less than one component selected from Cu, Ag, and Au, and an element Q is an element of not less than one component selected from Al, Ga, and In), and a D value defined by the expression D=-2a+3b+c is not less than -3. Preferably, (a) is≥7.7 and≤8.0, (b) is≥3.4 and≤3.9, and (c) is≥2.2 and≤3.6. More preferably, the thermoelectric conversion material is a sintered compact with a sintered density of more than 95% of theoretical density, and the thermoelectric conversion material has a strongest peak ratio of a clathrate compound phase of≥85%.
