<p>A bioabsorbable surgical biomaterial that is a composite matrix of cross-linked alginate fibers and cellulose fibers is described. The composite matrix is at least partially oxidized throughout and results in a biomaterial with the desired fluid absorption and bioabsorption characteristics for surgical applications, such as use as a bioabsorbable surgical sponge. A method of manufacturing the bioabsorbable surgical biomaterial by electrospinning is also disclosed.</p>
