<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical waveguide including a spot size converter having excellent spot size conversion efficiency by shortening the optical waveguide length and reducing the size thereof so as to be applied to the size of a magnetic recording head. <P>SOLUTION: The optical waveguide has a core as a waveguide through which light is propagated, a clad surrounding the core, and a spot size converter member. The core is equipped with a light incidence surface end face and a light emitting surface end face, and has a tapered portion that is a plate body having a substantially trapezoidal shape in plan view, and a waveguide core portion connected with a minimum section portion of the tapered portion, extended to a targeted waveguide position while maintaining the cross section, to propagate the light mainly in a single mode. The tapered portion is equipped with first and second nearly trapezoidal flat faces. First and second triangular plate-like spot size converter members formed of the same material as the core material are arranged and formed in a substantially symmetrical structure on both the flat faces. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT</p> |
