PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize a variable valve mechanism by arranging a lost motion spring in a compact manner, and simplifying a stopper for regulating any uncontrolled motion. SOLUTION: A lost motion spring 36 for urging a sub cam 18 in the abutting direction on a valve system cam 15 is constituted of a torsional spring consisting of a body part 36a, a first arm part 36b and a second arm part 36c. In comparison with a case in which the sub cam is constituted of a coil spring, the installation space can be saved. Further, when a control arm 20 for supporting the sub cam 18, a rocker arm 19 and the lost motion spring 36 is assembled to a cylinder head 12 as a sub assembly, a second arm part 36c of the lost-motion spring 36 is abutted on and locked to a locking part 19d of the rocker arm 19 even if the sub cam 18 urged by the lost motion spring 36 is oscillated around a sub cam shaft 17 without any restriction, the uncontrolled motion of the sub cam 18 is regulated to enhance the assembly property of a control arm 20.
