PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce noise in displaying halftone in an electrophoretic display device. SOLUTION: Before the first drive voltage pulse (Pa1), of at least one drive voltage pulse (Pa1 and Pa2), is applied to a pixel (20) in a first display state (for example, white), at least one of a potential of a first control line (95), potential of a second control line (94), and common potential (Vcom) is varied while a data signal supplied from a data line (Xd1 and Xd2) is held by a memory circuit (25), a compensation voltage pulse (Pc1) of a polarity reverse to the first drive voltage pulse (Pa1) is applied to an electrophoretic element (23).
