<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system that does not generate "stomp" of a MIMO packet by starting transmission of a subsequent MIMO packet before the transmission of a preceding MIMO packet is complete, in a legacy device adapted for IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g standards for wireless LAN (WLAN). <P>SOLUTION: A multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system can transmit on multiple antennas simultaneously and receive on multiple antennas simultaneously. However, because legacy 802.11a and 802.11g devices are not able to decode multiple data streams, such a legacy device may "stomp" on a MIMO packet by starting transmission of the packet before the transmission of the preceding MIMO packet is complete. The legacy devices are allowed to decode the length of the MIMO packet and to restrain transmission during the period of the MIMO packet.
