PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent lowering in the temperature of a post-treatment device along with the lowering of the temperature of exhaust gas in a PCI combustion region. SOLUTION: In this exhaust emission control system 1 for an automobile provided with a post-treatment device for controlling exhaust emission in an exhaust gas passage 3 of an internal combustion engine 2, the post-treatment device is used as a main post-treatment device 4, and an auxiliary post-treatment device 12 smaller in capacity than the main post-treatment device 4 is provided in parallel with the main post-treatment device 4 in a branch passage 11 provided in the exhaust main passage 3 through a selector valve 10. A flow rate sensor 13 is provided in the exhaust gas passage 3 to detect whether combustion is normal combustion or premixed compression self-ignition combustion. A control device 14 is provided to control the selector valve 10 so that the exhaust gas flows to the main post-treatment device 4 side in normal combustion and that the exhaust gas flows to the auxiliary post-treatment device 12 side in the premixed compression self-ignition combustion.
