PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determined the kind of an optical disk at high speed in a tracking-off state. SOLUTION: The optical disk device includes: a semiconductor laser 105 emitting a laser beam on an information recording layer 101a of an optical disk 101; a photodetector 109 outputting a detection signal from a laser beam reflected by the information recording layer; a tracking detecting part 118 detecting a tracking error signal based on the detection signal; a wobble detecting part 116 outputting a wobble signal based on the detection signal; a wobble envelope signal detecting part 117 rectifying a wobble signal output from the wobble detecting part, smoothing it and outputting a wobble envelope signal; and a control part 125 determining whether a groove of the optical disk is convex or concave when viewed from an incident plane of the laser beam, based on polarities of the wobble envelope signal and the tracking error signal, and performing tracking control based on the determination result.
