摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spark-ignited internal combustion engine wherein the output torque of the internal combustion engine can be adjusted even if an actuator is stuck while the internal combustion engine is stopped. SOLUTION: The spark-ignited internal combustion engine comprises a variable compression ratio mechanism A capable of varying machine compression ratio, a variable valve timing mechanism B capable of controlling the valve closing timing of an intake valve, and a throttle valve 17 provided inside an engine intake passage. The variable compression ratio mechanism, the variable valve timing mechanism, and throttle opening are controlled so that during engine operation an operating point indicating a combination of the machine compression ratio, the intake valve valve-closing timing, and the throttle opening does not enter into transgression prohibition areas X<SB>1</SB>, X<SB>2</SB>. The transgression prohibition areas are set so that safety areas Z<SB>1</SB>, Z<SB>2</SB>exist which prevent transgression into the transgression prohibition areas regardless of the opening of the throttle valve relative to the combination of the machine compression ratio and the intake valve valve-closing timing. When the internal combustion engine is stopped, the operating point indicating the combination of the machine compression ratio and the intake valve valve-closing period is controlled to be an operating point within the safety areas.
