PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document reading device capable of surely removing, from a contact glass surface, foreign matter, such as, shavings of a roller, paper powder of a document, dust or dirt adhering to the contact glass surface, preventing the removed dust, or the like, from adhering to a read position of the document on the contact glass surface again, and obtaining superior read images. SOLUTION: The document reading device includes a cleaning member arranged to contact an upper surface of contact glass for reading a document, a housing member including a groove part for housing foreign matters on a contact glass surface, and a movement means to relatively move the contact glass and the cleaning member, and is controlled so that a contact part of the cleaning member to the contact glass surface is moved to an opening position of the groove part of the housing member beyond a read position.
