PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve abrasion resistance while suppressing deterioration of workability, low heat generation properties, and productivity. SOLUTION: The rubber composition used for a pneumatic tire, particularly for the base tread of a tire for heavy load, includes 100 pts.mass of a rubber component of a diene rubber, 0.1 to 5 pts.mass of a polymaleimide compound having two or more maleimide groups in one molecule (for example, bismaleimide), 0.1-5 pts.mass of saccharides (for example, alkyl-D-glucopyranoside), and 0.3to 3 pts.mass of sulfur.
