摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for safely producing hydrogen gas by reacting metal sodium with water. SOLUTION: Metal sodium is cut with a guillotine type cutter 20 or the like to be made into chips 1 and the metal sodium chips 1 are supplied from a charging port 6 made in a transport pipe 4 which is inserted into a water layer in a tightly closed water tank 3, in a position where an elevator 5 moving up and down in the transport pipe stops at the uppermost position. The metal sodium chips 1 are placed in the elevator 5 and the elevator 5 is lowered to feed the metal sodium chips 1 into a water discharge pipe 13 connected to a water-jet pump 12 disposed in the water layer. The fed metal sodium chips 1 are immediately pushed into the water layer through a water jet from the water-jet pump 12. The metal sodium chips 1 pushed into the water layer react with the water 2 to thereby generate hydrogen gas. The generated hydrogen gas is stored in a storage tank. The storage tank as a pressure tank is provided with a pressure sensor, and when the internal pressure of the tank reaches a certain value or above, the pressure sensor works to stop the driving of the cutter, and the supply of metal sodium is stopped.
