The invention relates to a process for liquid crystal display recycling, which comprises the following process steps: introduction of liquid crystal displays to be processed into a closed space which has an exhaust air purification unit for the treatment of exhaust air; mechanical comminution (shredding) of introduced liquid crystal displays in the closed space in order to produce a material stream of fragments of the introduced liquid crystal displays; separation of the fragments into at least two fractions of which one of the fractions is a fine fraction formed by fragments smaller than a defined size and at least one other of the fractions contains fragments which are larger than the defined size; separation of the mercury from the fragments which are larger than the defined size; transporting away of the released mercury by means of an air stream, filtration of the air stream to free the air stream of mercury; and discharge of the fragments which are larger than the defined size and have been freed of mercury from the closed space.
