The device has a tensioning device (2) supported at a machine-fixed thrust bearing (8). The tensioning device with a tensioning part (7) i.e. tensioning roller, lies at a section (3.1) of a continuous traction unit (3) i.e. belt, where the section is provided between a driving wheel (5) and a driven wheel (4). A force sensor (6) is provided between the tensioning part and a thrust bearing. The tensioning device exerts the pressing force or traction force on the traction unit by the tensioning part. The sensor senses reaction force introduced by the tensioning device into the thrust bearing.
