An electrolyte solution for a rechargeable lithium battery, including a lithium salt, a non-aqueous organic solvent, and an additive including fluoroethylene carbonate, a vinyl-containing carbonate, a substituted or unsubstituted cyclic sulfate or a substituted or unsubstituted cyclic sulfonate, and a nitrile-based compound represented by the following Chemical Formula 1:
