A micro-organism capable of hydrolysing and fermenting C5 and C6 polysaccharides is genetically modified to disrupt lactate dehydrogenase activity, resulting in increased ethanol production and decreased lactic acid production. The micro-organism is preferably amesophilicClostridiumspecies, and in particularClostridiumphytofermentans. The modified micro-organism is capable of producing ethanol from cellulose, hemicelluloses, and is capable of fermenting xylose. Vectors and primers for disrupting the Cphy_1232 and Cphy_1117 lactate dehydrogenase genes of Clostridium phytofermentans are provided. |
