A system for communication of information from a plurality of vehicles comprises a vehicle unit (16) mounted in each vehicle and one or more receiver nodes (2b) arranged to receive reports from said vehicle unit (16) on one or more public receiving frequencies (L1,... LN). The system further comprises at least one transmitter node (2a), which is arranged to receive reports from said vehicle units (16) and to transmit the most recently received report on a transmitting frequency (SA) that is unique to the service area of the transmitting node, a plurality of local receiver units (16), which are arranged to receive reports from said transmitter nodes (2a), and a processing unit, which is connected to each receiver unit and arranged to process received reports with a view to generating processed traffic information. This system enables a local stationary and/or mobile processing unit to gain access to unprocessed report data from a whole fleet of vehicles. In this way, the processing units themselves can generate processed traffic information without the need for a complex system structure for communicating special-purpose messages with a high information content. |
