The ammonium salt of an isobutylenemaleamic acid copolymer is prepared by treating particles of an isobutylene-maleic anhydride heteropolymer with ammonia at ordinary or elevated temperature, if desired in the presence of moisture. The heat of reaction is preferably removed by cooling. The product is a half amide-half ammonium salt of formula: <FORM:0734714/IV (a)/1> where X is the isobutylene residue. The product, which is a polyelectrolyte, may be used as a size, for stabilizing aqueous emulsions and dispersions, and particularly for stabilizing soil aggregates. The ammonium salt may be converted into the free acid by treatment with strong aqueous hydrochloric acid. Specifications 730,463, 730,464 and 734,504 and U.S.A.
