An automotive exhaust system has a gas return unit in a housing (11) containing twin valves (10) one (12) of which discharges to (13) an exhaust gas cooling unit and the second (52) to a by-pass pipe (53) without a cooler. Both valve flaps (17, 18) are operated by a single actuator (27), which only opens one at a time via shafts (18, 58). The shafts operate independently and are parallel to each other. The valve flaps are located side-by-side but are separated by a distance. The housing has one or two inlets and two outlets for exhaust gases, each with associated valve flap.
